Reading on Tablets, Laptops May Change the Way You Think: Study

Reading on Tablets, Laptops May Change the Way You Think: Study                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Tablet and laptop users, take note! Using digital platforms for reading may change the way you think, making you more inclined to focus on concrete details rather than interpreting information more abstractly, a new study has found.

The findings serve as another wake-up call to how digital media may be affecting our likelihood of using abstract thought, researchers said.

Scientists from Dartmouth College in the US tested the basic question - would processing the same information on a digital versus non-digital platform affect "construal levels" the fundamental level of concreteness versus abstractness that people use in perceiving and interpreting behaviours, events and other informational stimuli.

In order to study the basic question of whether processing the same information on one platform or the other would trigger a different baseline "interpretive lens" or mindset that would influence construals of information, researchers tried to hold as many factors as possible constant between the digital and non-digital platforms.

Reading material and other content for the study, for example, was published using the same print size and format in both the digital and non-digital (print) versions.

The research was comprised of four studies that evaluated how information processing is affected by each platform. A total of more than 300 participants, ages 20 to 24 years old, took part in the studies.

Participants were asked to read a short story by on either a physical printout (non-digital) or in a PDF on a PC laptop (digital), and were then asked to take a pop-quiz, paper-and-pencil comprehension test.

For the abstract questions, on average, participants using the non-digital platform scored higher on inference questions with 66 percent correct, as compared to those using the digital platform, who had 48 percent correct, researchers said.

On the concrete questions, participants using the digital platform scored better with 73 percent correct, as compared to those using the non-digital platform, who had 58 percent correct, they said.

Participants were then told to read a table of information about four, fictitious Japanese car models on either a PC laptop screen or paper print-out, and were then asked to select which car model is superior.

As many as 66 percent of the participants using the non-digital platform (printed materials) reported the correct answer, as compared to 43 percent of those using the digital platform, researchers said.

Triggering a more abstract mindset prior to an information processing task on a digital platform appeared to help facilitate a better performance on tasks that require abstract thinking, they said.

"Given that psychologists have shown that construal levels can vastly impact outcomes such as self-esteem and goal pursuit, it is crucial to recognise the role that digitisation of information might be having on this important aspect of cognition," said Geoff Kaufman from Dartmouth College.

How Mother's Milk Boosts Baby's Immunity
Immune antibodies from mother's breast milk interact with the immune system of the new-born to help shape lifelong immune responses. (Representational Image)
NEW YORK:  Mother's milk gives babies antibodies along with microbes to support the infant's gut immune responses, new research says.

Immune antibodies from mother's breast milk interact with the immune system of the new-born to help shape lifelong immune responses for establishing boundaries and balance between gut microbes and the mammalian host.

If this balance fails to establish or later falters, this may result chronic inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease - Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Specific antibodies present in breast milk promote peace between the immune system and common gut-dwelling bacteria by putting the damper on inflammatory responses.

"This study provides real evidence that breast milk is important for a new-born's health," said lead study author Meghan Koch from the University of California-Berkeley.

"Breastfeeding helps to instruct the new-born's immune system on how to appropriately respond to non-pathogenic bacteria, many of which may reside in the gut for a lifetime," Koch added in a paper published in the journal Cell.

When the child is born, suddenly the infant is exposed to bacteria from the wider world. The body learns to tolerate many bacterial species and the relationship is regarded as mutually beneficial as gut bacteria aid digestion help prevent infection and enhance immune function.

The team conducted a study on mice and found that three specific types of antibodies, Immunoglobulin A (IgA), Immunoglobulin G2b (IgG2b), and immunoglobulin G3 (IgG3), are present in breast milk and promote peace between the immune system and common gut-dwelling bacteria by putting the damper on inflammatory responses.

Are you crazy about posting selfies? You may be narcissist

Are you crazy about posting selfies? You may be narcissist
Are you a self-obsessed person who loves to click selfies? Korean researchers have found that narcissists are more likely to show selfie-posting behavior on social networking sites such as Facebook as well as evince great interest in the feedback they receive.
A narcissistic personality is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others.
“Across all social media technologies, narcissists (as compared to non-narcissists) tend to engage in more self-enhancement strategies in hopes of gaining admiration,” said Brenda K Wiederhold from Virtual Reality Medical Institute at Brussels, Belgium.
According to researchers, the involvement in comments received to their own selfies and their interest in other people’s selfies did not however mean that they were more likely to give feedback.
The authors describe the link between the degree of narcissism and self-promotion through selfies in a journal – Cyber psychology, Behavior, and Social Networking.
Individuals with a higher degree of narcissism have a more favorable attitude towards the act of posting selfies, said Jung-Ah Lee and Yong jun Sung from Korea University found
“However, since narcissism does not completely explain selfie posting, future studies are needed to uncover additional psychological or social factors that influence selfie posting behavior,” Wiederhold added.

CAT RESULTS IN JANUARY -EXPECTED CUT OFF MARKS FOR OBC,SC ST, GENERAL

The results of Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by IIM Ahmedabad in November 2015 are expected to be released in the second week of January 2016. A candidate’s CAT 2015 score card will be made available at the official website and individual information will not be sent. As compared to the last five years, this year more than two lakhs candidates have appeared for this examination. Therefore, the cut-offs are likely to be affected this year.  All candidates should also make a note that from this year onward, six new IIMs have been added to the list of 13 existing ones, thereby, increasing the total number of seats at IIMs.

Selection Criteria for IIM Admission through CAT

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) conducts Common Admission Test (CAT) every year. There are 19 IIMs operating in India, out of which 6 have become operational in 2015 only. The result of CAT will be declared in the second week of January 2016.
CAT score, overall percentile score, along with the sectional cut-offs, play a major role, for candidates to get shortlisted for the further round of selection and get a call from various IIMs and other non-IIM management institutes
Thereafter, each IIM will release CAT Cutoff. Cutoff refers to the minimum score or percentile which a candidate must secure to get shortlisted by the participating institute for the next rounds of the selection process. While the top B-schools will have a higher range of CAT 2015 cutoffs, 90+ percentile, the mid-rung B-schools’ cutoffs range from 75 to 80 percentile and that of the lower rung B-schools is around 50 percentiles.

CAT 2015 Cut Off Marks Analysis:

Candidates who will secure CAT scores more than or equal to as stated in the CAT Cutoff 2015 will only be considered for IIM admissions. All IIMs will be releasing their individual CAT Cutoff and they all follow their own selection process distinguished from each other. IIMs not only consider the CAT score but also take into consideration the academic record, work experience and participation of the candidates in extra-curricular activities. So only achieving high percentile in CAT 2015 will not guarantee admission into IIM.
The aspirants must know that they need a balanced high percentile because they would not only require overall high percentile but also, across all the sections. Sectional cut-off percentiles should be around 85+ for the newer IIMs and 90+ for the existing ones. This implies that a student who scores overall 96 percentile with 95 in Quant, 90 in DI & LR and 87 in Verbal might get a call from IIMs, perhaps the new IIMs, whereas someone with an overall score of 98 percentile getting 100 in Quant, but 80 in Verbal would miss out.
Here are some estimates of CAT percentile scores and cut-offs for the various IIMs:

CAT 2015 cut-off for IIM Ahmedabad

IIM Ahmedabad gives 70 percent weightage to CAT score and 30 per cent to application rating (academics, co-curricular, extracurricular and work experience). IIM Ahmedabad also majorly focuses on getting students from varied academic backgrounds; Arts, Commerce and Humanities. The cut-off is likely to be 99.5 percentile.
IIM Ahmedabad

CAT 2015 cut-off for IIM Calcutta

IIM Calcutta gives 67 percent weightage to CAT score and 30 per cent to academics. The remaining 3 percent points are given to girl candidates to promote gender diversity. For IIM C, the cut off is probably going to be above 99 percentile
IIM Calcutta

CAT 2015 cut-off for IIM Bangalore

IIM Bangalore does not have the strict percentile criteria for the second round of short-listing. However, it gives major emphasis on candidates’ academics (Class 10, 12 and Bachelors).

  • For the six new IIMs opened this year, CAT 2015 score (overall and sectional) would be the only deciding factor for a call to the next round.
  • The lowest percentile expected for a call from the new IIMs should be in the range of 96-97 percentiles.

Now let us have a look at the expected CAT 2015 Cutoffs of the top non-IIM B-schools.

The candidates looking for a place in various non-IIM institutes; a percentile above 99 is required to get a call from Indian Institute of Technology (SJMSOM) Bombay.
For, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi and Indian Institute of Technology (DMS), Delhi – a percentile score of 98 percentile, should fetch you a call for the next round.
One can expect a call from Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai at percentile score of 95 plus.
The institutes such as T. A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Ghaziabad, Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA), Chennai and International Management Institute (IMI), Delhi, a score of 90 percentile above should fetch you a call to the next round.
CAT 2015
List of the candidates shortlisted for the next round, will be made available at respective IIMs’ or other institutes’ websites. The candidates should start their preparations for second round of admission process. Also, the candidate should keep all their documents (academic certificates, work experience certificates, personal documents and curriculum vitae) ready for the next stage process for various B-schools’ admissions.
